Understanding Immigration Support Documents: Endeavor Statements, Personal Plans, Professional Plans, and Business Plans

An immigration endeavor can be described in a variety of ways. Depending on your goals, your attorney may advise a personal plan, professional plan, or immigration business plan.
An immigration endeavor can be described in a variety of ways. Depending on your goals, your attorney may advise a personal plan, professional plan, or immigration business plan.

When preparing a U.S. employment-based immigration petition, partnering with an experienced immigration attorney is an essential first step. Attorneys can help determine the most appropriate visa pathway, interpret USCIS policy updates, and guide clients through complex evidentiary requirements.

*ProfVal is not a law firm and does not provide legal advice, but we can connect you with qualified immigration attorneys through our free referral service at ProfVal Free Immigration Lawyer Referral.

Once legal strategy is established, the next critical task involves gathering credible, well-structured supporting documentation. This is where ProfVal’s systematic and research-oriented approach can add significant value.

In addition to providing Expert Opinion Letters, ProfVal assists attorneys and their clients by producing what are referred to as "endeavor statements," Personal, Professional, and Business Plans, that align with the specific requirements of each visa category.

Types Endeavor Statements

An endeavor statement is a narrative that often describes what you plan to do in the U.S., why it matters, and the broader benefits your work will bring. Think of it as the professional story for your U.S. immigration petition, backed by concrete facts, data, and real-world relevance.

It typically:

  • Defines your project, business activity, or area of expertise.

  • Explains the problem or opportunity your work addresses.

  • Demonstrates its alignment with U.S. priorities (e.g., economic growth, innovation, public health, sustainability).

Example: For an EB-2 NIW applicant in management consulting, the endeavor statement might outline a plan to help small and mid-sized U.S. companies improve efficiency and profitability, showing how this will boost local job creation and economic competitiveness.

When you need it: Particularly critical for initial phase EB-2 NIW and EB-1 cases, where the “national importance” or “extraordinary” nature of your work must be clear from the outset. It is critical to include a detailed and well supported endeavor statement since the beginning of your initial petition, as USCIS might not be flexible if you later change or modify your endeavor.

Personal Plan

Typically, a personal plan is akin to a shorter version of a Professional Plan, see below.

A personal plan is an individualized roadmap connecting your personal values, motivations, and life vision to your U.S. immigration goals. Unlike other plans, it focuses on you, your journey, purpose, and the personal stakes behind your relocation.

It typically:

  • Highlights your life story, personal challenges, and achievements.

  • Explains why you are committed to your proposed path.

  • Connects your personal mission to broader contributions in the U.S.

Example: For an EB-2 NIW applicant who has overcome significant barriers to become a leading advocate for rural healthcare, the personal plan might trace their childhood in a medically underserved region and explain how this drives their mission to improve healthcare access in the U.S.

When you need it: More common in NIW cases where a personal narrative strengthens the petition. Not typically used for investor or corporate transfer visas (E-2, L-1, H-1).

Professional Plan

A Professional Plan showcases your career trajectory, qualifications, and future objectives in the U.S., tying them directly to your visa requirements. It answers the question: “Why are you the right person to carry out this endeavor?”

It typically:

  • Summarizes your professional background and achievements.

  • Outlines your expertise, skills, and industry impact.

  • Provides a detailed plan for how you will advance your work in the U.S. using your experience.

Example: For an EB-1A applicant in biotechnology, the professional plan might outline extensive and significant years of research leadership, international patents, and plans to collaborate with U.S. research institutions to develop next-generation cancer therapies.

When you need it: Highly relevant for EB-1 and EB-2 NIW petitions, and sometimes useful for L-1 transfers to demonstrate your qualifications for an executive or specialized knowledge role.

Immigration Business Plan

An Immigration Business Plan is a comprehensive document that details the structure, strategy, and projected performance of a U.S.-based business. It is often a mandatory component for investor and entrepreneur visas.

It typically:

  • Describes the business model, target market, and competitive advantage.

  • Includes financial projections (revenue, expenses, profitability).

  • Outlines marketing, operations, and staffing plans.

  • Explains how the business will contribute to the U.S. economy (jobs, taxes, innovation).

Example: For an E-2 investor opening a specialty coffee shop, the business plan might include market analysis, growth strategy, projected hiring of five U.S. employees within two years, and partnerships with local suppliers.

When you need it: Essential for E-2 and L-1 new office cases; useful in EB-2 NIW and EB-1 if the endeavor involves establishing a U.S. company.

Our immigration business plans are produced in partnership with Guided Venture LLC, a sister company that specializes in business plans for a variety of purposes. This means the business plan we create for you will not only be useful for your immigration case but will also have practical, real-world applications.

2. Why These Services Are Useful

Each service has a different role in supporting an immigration case.

  • Strengthens credibility: Structured, well-researched plans can make your case more persuasive to adjudicators.

  • Provides evidence: These documents present tangible proof of your potential contributions.

  • Bridges cultural/legal gaps: Built to align to U.S. immigration expectations, which can make your application easier to understand and assess.

  • Addresses visa-specific criteria: Each plan is crafted to align with the prongs or evidentiary requirements of the visa category.

3. Visa-Specific Usefulness

  • Personal Plan: Use sparingly for employment-based cases, only when your personal narrative adds value to your petition.

  • Professional Plan: Ideal for showing your professional credibility, especially when your role, skills, and track record are critical to meeting visa requirements.
